Bathrooms can take on some nasty odours and it is important to eliminate those so that everyone in your household feels comfortable and clean when they use the bathroom. What are some common causes of these odours and how can they be prevented?

In short, some of the common causes of bad bathroom odours are:

  • * Poor ventilation.

  • * Bad drainage.

  • * Mould.

  • * Dirty fabrics

Ventilation

Bad bathroom odours can be prevented with good and proper ventilation. When you have the proper airflow through your bathroom, it can help to prevent those bad smells and to ensure that mold does not grow. There should be an overhead fan in your bathroom that is turned on whenever you are using it, whether you are using the commode or having a shower. An overhead fan circulates the air and proper ventilation ensures that the air is exchanged and refreshed often. An overhead fan can help to remove moisture from the air which will prevent mildew from building up. Your overhead ventilation fan should be cleaned at least once every six months. Keep the bathroom window open a slight amount to neutralize odours and increase the airflow.

Eliminate Odours

Rather than covering up smells, eliminate them. Any air freshening product is designed to simply cover up the smell and once that smell has worn off, the odour remains. If the odour in your bathroom is strong, it can be noticed over the scent of an air freshener. An odour eliminator product is designed to neutralize an odour instead of covering it up. An air purifier can be added to a plug to help increase the air circulation in the bathroom and remove any bacteria in the air that is causing odours. If your bathroom is small, you can purchase a smaller unit that is much less expensive than larger ones. These devices are designed to eliminate pollen, dander, dust, viruses and bacteria from the air of your bathroom.

You can also create your own odour eliminating product that is relatively inexpensive and effective. Mix two cups of water with a tablespoon of white vinegar, one teaspoon of baking soda and 8 – 10 drops of essential oil such as lavender. Add this liquid to a spray bottle and keep it in the bathroom. When it is needed, spray your odour eliminator in the bathroom.

Keep Your Bathroom Clean

Regular cleaning is once weekly, but you may need to add a deep cleaning at least once per month. Scrub around the toilet and the tub edges to remove set in odours. Use a mixture of lemon juice, vinegar and baking soda to scrub the area. You can also clean with essential oils because their powerful scents can help to remove tough odours. You can try sage, lavender, cedar, oregano and clove which all smell great and have antifungal and antimicrobial properties. Cleaning your bathroom regularly will prevent the build up of odours. Clean your toilet, sink, shower, bathtub, change out the linens and remove the garbage.

Clean Your Drain

A build up in your drain can cause a very strong bathroom odour. If you notice that your drain is slow or backs up, it may need some professional assistance. Do not hesitate to call a plumber to clean out your drains and ensure that your pluming systems are all working well.

Watch for Mold

If you notice mold in your bathroom, it can be caused because of inadequate ventilation and not enough cleaning. If you notice mold on the ceiling in your bathroom this can be because you have a mold issue, particularly if you clean it and it reappears. If you have a water leak under your sink, this can cause mold to grow. If you have been exposed to mold you may be suffering from a variety of symptoms including red, itchy eyes, rashes, wheezing, watering eyes and a runny nose. There are some strong cleaners that state that they remove mold, but they can leave strong odours that can cause headaches. You can remove mold by spraying undiluted vinegar onto it. Leave it in place for an hour and then rinse it with hot water and then dry it with a towel.

Wash all Bathroom Fabrics

Bathrooms are a damp environment. Wet towels can add to the bad odour and if you do not wash them on a regular basis, they can smell quite musty. All your fabrics including the shower curtain, towels, face clothes and hand towels should all be changed and washed weekly. Keep your toilet brush clean and dry if possible, this can also add to bathroom odours.

Bathroom odours can build and linger, and it is important to not only keep your bathroom clean, but to ensure that you have no leaking pipes or clogged drains. If you notice that you have a leak in any location or that your drains are not operating as they should, it could be time to call a plumber to take care of these problems for you professionally.
