Reading is a superpower! Introducing literature during the early years is critical if you want to promote a lifelong love of learning and creativity.

Fortunately, there are many talented Australian children’s authors you can rely on to deliver fun, engaging stories. These local classics can encourage even the youngest readers as they develop their literacy and social-emotional skills.

When it comes to classic Australian children’s literature, you might be wondering where to begin. Well, worry not. Here are three incredible Aussie authors you should introduce to your little one right now!

Laugh Along with Nick Bland

Born in Victoria’s picturesque Yarra Valley, author Nick Bland is a quintessential Aussie with no shortage of stories to tell. Growing up as the son of an artist and a teacher, Nick always dreamed of writing and illustrating his own books, and now that dream is a reality.

Starting his writing career back in 2001, today Nick Bland is the author of an extensive catalogue of kids’ books. Some of his most popular works include The Unscary Book, The Runaway Hug, The Very Clever Bear, and Walk of the Whales.

When he’s not busy writing, Nick works as a guardian for over 120 Indigenous boys in northern Australia.

Enjoy the Classics with Mem Fox

Mem Fox is the author of many classic Australian picture books we all know and love. A citizen of the world, Mem writes stories that children love. Her work fosters a love of books, with imaginative characters and engaging plots.

With best-selling works dating back to 1983, Mem has now written more than 40 wonderful children’s books, many of which have achieved commercial success on a global scale. Some of her fan favourites include Possum Magic, Where Is the Green Sheep? and Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes

Mem holds three honorary doctorates and gave back to the writing community for 24 years as an associate professor at South Australia’s Flinders University.

Celebrate Nature with May Gibbs

May Gibbs is Australia’s most beloved children’s author and illustrator, introducing young readers to the wonders of the country’s natural landscape and the beauty of the world around them.

Raised in Perth, Western Australia, May always wanted to write and draw, publishing her first book, About Us, in 1912. Later, she published the iconic Gumnut Babies and Snugglepot and Cuddlepie books, which are regarded as Aussie classics. May soon went on to tell many more stories about her much-loved blossom babies and gumnuts, delighting generations of readers.

When May passed away in 1969, she ensured that her work would continue to make a positive impact, bequeathing all rights to Northcott Disability Services and the Cerebral Palsy Alliance.

Foster a Lifelong Love of Literature

By introducing quality literature early on in life, you can encourage your children to celebrate all there is to love about reading. This can empower them to develop their knowledge and improve their understanding of the world and other people.

Choose your favourite children’s authors and share the stories you love with your little ones!
